Gaslighting

Gaslighting

Gaslighting is a form of emotional abuse in which a person manipulates and alters another person's perception of reality, leading them to question their own sanity. Gaslighting can occur in any type of relationship, including romantic relationships, friendships, and familial relationships. It can be a subtle and gradual process, and it can be difficult for the victim to recognize it and to seek help.

Symptoms:

  • Do you feel like you are going crazy or that no one believes you?

  • Do you find yourself second-guessing your own memories or perceptions?

  • Do you feel like you are constantly apologizing or making excuses for the other person's behavior?

  • Do you feel isolated from friends and family and dependent on the other person for validation?

  • Do you feel like you are constantly walking on eggshells around the other person?

Causes:

  • Gaslighting can be caused by a variety of factors.

  • It can be a tactic used by people with narcissistic or manipulative personalities to exert control over others.

  • It can also occur in relationships where one person has more power or control than the other.

Treatments:

  • The most effective treatment for gaslighting is therapy.

  • Therapy can help you recognize and understand the dynamics of the relationship, and teach you coping skills to manage your symptoms.

  • It's important to work with a therapist who understands the dynamics of gaslighting and can help you to regain a sense of trust in your own perceptions and reality.

  • Building a support system with friends and family can also help you to cope with the effects of gaslighting and to understand that you are not alone.
